Students studying for the BA

Overview of the Award

This is a modular Higher Education Programme aimed at equipping people for ministry, ordained, authorised and lay. The entry requirements are 3 Cs at A level or equivalent; consideration is given to students applying with Accredited Prior Certificated or Experiential learning, which helps them to move through the programme more quickly.

The ecumenical programme is divided into three streams entitled Bible; Christian Life and Thought; Church and World. The biblical stream includes teaching in Exegesis, Hermeneutics and Homiletics. The Christian Life and Thought stream includes Doctrine, Church History, Liturgy and Spirituality; and the Church and World stream includes Pastoral Theology and Practice. Some courses, eg Mission and Ethics sit in more than one stream. Students are expected to take a balanced programme across the three streams; for the Foundation Degree they must also do a substantial number of designated ‘Preparation and Practice’ courses which are geared towards the practice of ministry. There is a Core curriculum of compulsory courses: 90 credits at level 4, 75 at level 5 and 60 at level 6. These are shown in bold in the list below.

In practice the programme gives great flexibility to deliver modules through a variety of different teaching methods. These include full time and part time residential work in Cambridge; regional out centre delivery; and regional dispersed delivery, through dedicated workbooks for modules. There is a possibility of taking some modules as distance or blended learning courses.

One of the great advantages of this programme is the co-operation and collaboration between staff based across the region and including those based in Cambridge.
